Whenthe aerials are down, and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you are grown old, even at 20, but as long as your aerials are up, to catch waves of optimism, there is hope you may die young at
11、80.Knowledge and virtueKnowledge is one thing, virtue is another; good sense is not conscience, refinement is not humility, nor is largeness and justness of view faith. Philosophy, however enlightened, however profound, gives no mandover the passions, no influential motives, no vivifying principles.
12、 Liberal Education makes not the Christian, not theCatholic, but the gentleman. It is well to be a gentleman, itis well to have a cultivated intellect, a delicate taste, acandid, equitable, dispassionate mind, a noble and courteousbearing in the conduct of life-these are the connatural qualities of

Taken by themselves, they do but seemto be what they are not; they look like virtue at a distance, but they are detected by close observers, and on the long run; and hence it is that they arepopularly aused of pretense and hypocrisy, not, I repeat, from
15、their own fault, but because their professors and theiradmirers persist in taking them for what they are not, and are officious in arrogating for them a praise to which they have no claim. Quarry the granite rock with razors, or moor the vessel with a thread of silk, then may you hope with such keen
16、 and delicate instruments as human knowledge and human reason to contend against those giants, the passion and the pride of man.A poor farmer had a friend who was famous for the wonderful apple he grew. Oneday, his friend gave the farmer a young apple tree and told himto take it home and plant it. T
17、he farmer was pleased withthe gift, but when he got home he did not know where to plant it. He was afraid that if he planted the tree near the road,strangers would steal the fruit. If he planted the tree in one of his field, his neighbors would e at night and steal some ofthe apples. If he planted t
18、he tree near his house, his children would take the fruit. Finally he planted the tree in his woodwhere no one could see it. But without sunlight and good soil, the tree soon died. Later the friend asked the farmer why he had planted the tree in such a poor place."What's thedifference?"
19、; the farmer said angrily. "If I had planted the tree near the road, strangers would have stolen the fruit. If I had planted the tree in one of my field, my neighbors would have e at night and stolen some of the apples. If I had planted it near my house, my own children would have taken the fru
20、it.""Yes," said the friend, "but at least someonecould have enjoyed the fruit. Now you not only have robbed everyone of the fruit, but also you have destroyed a good apple tree!" A lesson of lifemy mother said whenevereverything happens for the best,I faced disappointment. &

22、to sports announcer. I hitchhiked to Chicago and knocked on the door ofevery station-and got turned down every time. In one studio, a kind lady told me that big stations couldn't risk hiring inexperienced person-"Go out in the sticks and find a smallstation that'll give you a chance, ”
23、she said. I thumbed home to Dixon, Illinois. While them was no radio-announcing jobs in Dixon, my father sad Montgomery Ward had opened a store and wanted a local athlete to manage its sports department. Since Dixon was where I had played high school football, I applied.The job sounded just right fo
24、r me. But I wasn't hired. My disappointment must have shown. "Everything happens for the best," Mom reminded me. Dad offered me the car to job hunt. I tried WOC Radio in Davenport, Iowa. The program director, a wonderful Scotsman named Peter MacArthur, told me they had already hired an
25、 announcer. As I left his office, myfrustration boiled over. I asked a1oud,"How can a fellow get to be a sport announcer if he can't get a job in a radio station?" I waswaiting for the elevator whenI heard MacArthur calling, "What was that you said about sports? Do you know anything about football?"Then he stood me before a microphone and asked meto broadcast an imaginary game. Onmyway home, as I have manytimes since, I thought of my mother's words: "if you carry on, one day something good will happen. Something wouldn
