Thekeyfactisthatallthreedictionariescanbeseentohaveadistinctly“cultural"aswellaslanguage
learningcontent.Thatbeingsaid,thewayinwhichtheyapproachtheculturalelementisnotidentical,

OxforddictionarycanthereforestandmorevigorousscrutinyforculturalbiasthantheLongmanpublication
becausethelatterdoesnothesitateaboutviewingtherestoftheworldfromtheculturalperspectivesofthe
Englishspeakingworld.TheculturalobjectivesoftheBBCdictionaryareinturnmoredistinctstill.Based
onananalysisofover70millionwordsrecordedfromtheBBCWorldServiceandNationalPublicRadioof
Washingtonoveraperiodoffouryears,their1,000briefencyclopedicentriesarebasedonpeopleand
placesthathavefeaturedinthenewsrecently.Theintendedusertheyhaveinmindisaregularlistenerto
theWorldServicewhowillhaveareasonablestandardofEnglishandadevelopedskillinlistening
comprehension.
Inreality,though,theBBCdictionarywillbepurchasedbyafarwiderrangeoflanguagelearners,as
willtheothertwodictionaries.Wewillbefacedwithasituationwheremanyoftheusersofthesedictionaries
willattheveryleasthavedistinctsocioculturalperspectivesandmayhaveworldviewswhicharetotally
