MomentumandIsolatedSystemsThepreviouspartofLesson2focusedontheLawofConservationofMomentum.Itwasstatedthat...Foracollisionoccurringbetweenobject1andobject2inanisolatedsystem,thetotalmomentumofthetwoobjectsbeforethecollisionisequaltothetotalmomentumofthetwoobjectsafterthecollision.Thatis,themomentumlostbyobject1isequaltothemomentumgainedbyobject2.Totalsystemmomentumisconservedforcollisionsoccurringinisolatedsystems.Butwhatmakesasystemofobjectsanisolatedsystem?Andismomentumconservedifthesystemisnotisolated?Thisisthefocusofthislesson.Asystemisacollectionoftwoormoreobjects.Anisolatedsystemisasystemwhichisfreefromtheinfluenceofanetexternalforce.Therearetwocriteriaforthepresenceofanetexternalforce;itmustbe...aforcewhichoriginatesfromasourceotherthanthetwoobjectsofthesystemaforcethatisnotbalancedbyotherforcesConsiderthecollisionoftwoballsonthebilliardstable.Thecollisionoccursinanisolatedsystemaslongasfrictionissmallenoughthatitsinfluenceuponthemomentumofthebilliardballscanbeneglected.Ifso,thentheonlyunbalancedforcesactinguponthetwoballsarethecontactforceswhichtheyapplytooneanother.Thesetwoforcesareconsideredinternalforcessincetheyresultfromasourcewithinthesystem-thatsourcebeingthecontactofthetwoballs.Forsuchacollision,totalsystemmomentumisconserved.Readthefollowingdescriptionsofacollisionandevaluatewhetherornotthecollisionoccursinanisolatedsystem.Ifitisnotanisolatedsystem,thenidentifythenetexternalforce.Collision
