Althoughdeafandblind,HelenKellergraduatedfromcollege.Shewroteaboutherlifeandbecameanactivistforthedisabled.Secondoftwoparts.Transcriptofradiobroadcast:14November2023VOICEONE:I'mRayFreeman.VOICETWO:AndI'mShirleyGriffithwithPEOPLEINAMERICA-aprograminSpecialEnglishbytheVoiceofAmerica.EveryweekwetellaboutsomeonewhowasimportantinthehistoryoftheUnitedStates.Thisweekwefinishthestoryofawriterandeducator,HelenKeller.Shehelpedmillionsofpeoplewho,likeher,wereblindanddeaf.VOICEONE:WereportedlastweekthatHelenKellersufferedfromastrangesicknesswhenshewasonlynineteenmonthsold.Itmadehercompletelyblindanddeaf.Forthenextfiveyearsshehadnowayofsuccessfullycommunicatingwithotherpeople.Then,ateacher--AnneSullivan--arrivedfromBostontohelpher.MissSullivanherselfhadoncebeenblind.ShetriedtoteachHelentolivelikeotherpeople.Shetaughtherhowtouseherhandsasawayofspeaking.MissSullivantookHelenoutintothewoodstoexplorenature.Theyalsowenttothecircus,thetheater,andeventofactories.MissSullivanexplainedeverythinginthelanguagesheandHelenused--alanguageoftouch--offingersandhands.Helenalsolearnedhowtorideahorse,toswim,torowaboatand,eventoclimbtrees.HelenKelleroncewroteabouttheseearlydays.VOICETWO:"OnebeautifulspringmorningIwasaloneinmyroom,reading.Suddenly,awonderfulsmellintheairmademegetupandputoutmyhands.Thespiritofspringseemedtobepassinginmyroom.‘Whatisit?’Iasked.ThenextminuteIknewitwascomingfromthemimosatreeoutside.Iwalkedoutsidetotheedgeofthegarden,towardthetree.Thereitwas,shakinginthewarmsunshine.Itslongbranches,soheavywithflowers,almosttouchedtheground.Iwalkedthroughtheflowerstothetreeitselfandthenjuststoodsilent.ThenIputmyfootonthetreeandpulledmyselfupintoit.IclimbedhigherandhigheruntilIreachedalittleseat.Longagosomeonehadputitthere.Isatforalongtime...Nothinginalltheworldwaslikethis.”"VOICEONE:Later,Helenlearnedthatnaturecouldbecruelaswellasbeautiful.Strangelyenoughshediscoveredthisinadifferentkindoftree.VOICETWO:"OnedaymyteacherandIwerereturningfromalongwalk.Itwasafinemorning.Butitstartedtogetwarmandheavy.Westoppedtoresttwoorthreetimes.Ourlaststopwasunderacherrytreeashortwayfromthehouse.Theshadewasniceandthetreewaseasytoclimb.MissSullivanclimbedwithme.Itwassocoolupinthetreewedecidedtohavelunchthere.Ipromisedtositstilluntilshewenttothehouseforsomefood.Suddenlyachangecameoverthetree.Iknewtheskywasblackbecausealltheheat,whichmeantlighttome,haddiedoutoftheair.Astrangeodorcameuptomefromtheearth.Iknewit--itwastheodorwhichalwayscomesbeforeathunderstorm.Ifeltalone,cutofffromfriends,highabovethefirmearth.Iwasfrightened,andwantedmyteacher.Iwantedtogetdownfromthattreequickly.ButIwasnohelptomyself.Therewasamomentofterriblesilence.Thenasuddenandviolentwindbegantoshakethetreeanditsleaveskeptcomingdownallaroundme.Ialmostfell.Iwantedtojump,butwasafraidtodoso.Itriedtomakemyselfsmallinthetree,asthebranchesrubbedagainstme.JustasIthoughtthatboththetreeandIweregoingtofall,ahandtouchedme...Itwasmyteacher.Iheldherwithallmystrengththenshookwithjoytofeelthesolidearthundermyfeet."(MUSIC)VOICEONE:MissSullivanstayedwithHelenformanyyears.ShetaughtHelenhowtoread,howtowriteandhowtospeak.Shehelpedhertogetreadyforschoolandcollege.Morethananything,Helenwantedtodowhatothersdid,anddoitjustaswell.Intime,Helendidgotocollegeandcompletedherstudieswithhighhonors.Butitwasahardstruggle.FewofthebookssheneededwerewrittenintheBraillelanguagethattheblindcouldreadbytouchingpages.MissSullivanandothershadtoteachherwhatwasinthesebooksbyformingwordsinherhands.Thestudyofgeometryandphysicswasespeciallydifficult.Helencouldonlylearnaboutsquares,triangles,andothergeometricalformsbymakingthemwithwires.Shekeptfeelingthedifferentshapesofthesewiresuntilshecouldseetheminhermind.
