The e-mails said the Ivy League school is “delighted to wele” the 277 applicants to its graduate program in public health. But less than one hour later, the applicants received another e-mail saying the acceptance e-mails were sent by mistake. Julie Kornfeld is the Mailman Schools vice president for education. She apologized for the mistake and said the school is working to make sure “this mistake will not happen in the future”. She said the school regrets the “stress and confusion caused by this mistake”. This if far from the first time a college has sent out “acceptance” notices by mistake. Last year, the State University of New York at Buffalo e-mailed 5,000 mistaken acceptance notices. The school quickly corrected the information. The applicants were told they were still being considered for admission, but that no final decision had been made. Time Magazine keeps a list of colleges that mistakenly tell students they were accepted. In 2014, John Hopkins University in Baltimore sent out acceptance notices to 300 applicants. That came as a surprise. Earlier, the students were told their applications had been rejected. The university quickly sent out another notice saying, regrettably, that the first rejection letter was correct. Anna Ivey is a college admissions adviser and a former college admissions officer. She said college officials “l(fā)ive in fear” of making a mistake on something as important as admission to a students dream school. But college admissions require “enough human data entry”, so it isnt avoided producing mistakes, Ivey said. Though such mistakes happen maybe 1 percent of the time, Ivey said, “Its a 100 percent failure rate for that applicant who gets the wrong letter.”21. How might the 5,000 applicants of the State University of New York feel when receiving the second e-mail?A. Angry and hopeless B. anxious and puzzledC.Disappointed but hopeful D. acceptable and reasonable22. Why did Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore send a third letter?A. To deny the second letter B. to explain the second letterC.to give details to the first letter D. to make an apology to the applicants23.What did Anna Ivey think of the mistakes made by universities? A. They are fair to the applicants. B. These mistakes are not forgivable. C.These mistakes should have been avoided. D. There exists possibility to make mistakes.B What will our world be like in 2050? There are two features in the growth of world population. First, the annual increase in population in 15 European countries, in the past few years, has been only 300,000. The United Nations estimate(估計) that by 2050, the population of European countries will decrease from the current 0.72 billion to 0.63 billion. Second, the population in developing countries is growing rapidly. By 2050, the population of Africa is expected to reach 1.8 billion, 0.9 billion more than its current population. A recent research report published by the United Nations indicates that it is quite possible that the Earths temperature is rising well above the previous estimate. The Antarctic ice sheet, which contains 90% of the worlds ice, has lost significant mass in the past few years. The discovery es as a surprise to scientists, who thought that the continent would gain ice this century because of increased snowfall in a warming climate. A research team from the University of Colorado used satellite data to estimate that the ice sheet will lose up to 48 cubic miles by 2050. Africas rivers face great change that will leave a quarter of the continent severely short of water by the middle of the century, according to a global warming study published today. Even modest decreases in rain in western Africa will see rivers lose as much as 80% of their water and a rise of what the scientists call “water refugees(難民)”. “In those areas where there is already a water shortage, its going to have a destructive(破壞性的) effect,” the study says. “If youre already walking 5 km to the nearest stream(小溪), by 2050, its going to mean walking 30 km or moving your whole household closer to the water source.”24.What surprises the scientists according to Paragraph 3?A. The Antarctic is sheet has decreased. B. The Earths temperature is going down.C.Global warming is destroying the Earth. D.Snowfall increases in the Antarctic area.25. What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph stress?A. The ill fate of Africas rivers. B. The importance of doing exercise.C. The hard life of the African refugees. D. The seriousness of the water problem.26. What was the most possible feeling of the author when he wrote this text?A. Happy B. Angry C. concerned D. calmCThe engineer Camilla Olivetti was 40 years old when he started the pany in 1908. At his factory in Ivrea, he designed and produced the first Italian typewriter. Today the panys head office is still in Ivrea, near Turin, but the pany is much larger than it was in those days and there are offices all around the world, By 1930 there was a staff of 700 and the pany turned out 13,000 machines a year. Some went to customers in Italy, but Olivetti exported more typewriters to other countries. Camillos son, Adriano, started working for the pany in 1924 and later he became the boss. He introduced a standard speed for the production line and he employed technology and design specialist. The pany developed new and better typewriters and then calculators(計算器). In 1959 it produced the ELEA puter system. This was the first mainframe(主機(jī)) puter designed and made in Italy. After Adriano died in 1960, the pany had a period of financial problem. Other panies, especially the Japanese, made faster progress in electronic technology than the Italian pany.In 1978, Carlo de Benedetti became the new boss. Olivetti increased its marketing and service networks and made agreements with other panies to design and produce more advanced office equipment. Soon it became one of the worlds leading panies in information technology and munications. There are now five independent panies in the Olivetti groupone for personal puters, one for other office equipment, one for systems and service, and two for telemunications.27.From the text we learn that A. by 1930 Olivetti produced 13,000 typewriters a yearB. Olivetti earned more in the 1960s than in the 1950sC. some of Olivettis 700 staff regularly visited customers in ItalyD. Olivetti set up offices in other countries from the very beginning28. What was probably the direct result of Olivettis falling behind in electronic technologyA. Adrianos death B.A period of financial problemsC. Its faster progress D. Its agreements with other panies.29. What do we know about Olivetti?A. It produced the best typewriter in the world.B. It designed the worlds first mainframe puter.C. It exported more typewriters than other panies.D. It has five independent panies with its head office in Ivrea.30. The best title for the text would be A. The Origin of Olivetti. B.
