Theresearch,publishedinthejournaProceedingsoftheNationalAcademyofSciences,examinedairborne
micrcplastics,whichhavebeenfarlessstidictlthanplasticinoceansandrivers.
Theteamgatheredmorethan300samplesofairbornemicroplasticsfrom11sitesacrossthewesternUS.These
werethebasisforatmosphericmodelingthatestimated(彳占計)ihecontributionfromdifferentsources,andwasthefirst
suchstudytodoso.
TheyfoundthatroadswerethemainfactorinthewesternUS,linkedtoabout85percentofthernicroplasticsin
(heair.Thesearelikelytoincludepaniclesfromtiresonvehicles,andplasticsfromlitterthathadbeenbrokendown.
Theresearchersenlargedtheirmodelingworktoagloballevelandthissuggestedthatwhileroadsarealsolikelyto
bethemaindriverofairborneplasticsinEurope,SouthAmericaandAustralia,plasticparticlesblownupfromfields
maybeamuchbiggerfactorinAfricaandAsia.
ProfessorAndreasStohloftheUniversityofVienna'sFacultyofEarthSciences,andnotpartofthestudyteam,
said,*Thestudyconfirmstheglobal-scalenatureofmicroplastictransportintheatmosphereanddoesagoodjobin
highlightinghighlyrelevantandconcerningpossibilities,butmoremeasurementdataisneededtogetabetterideaof
