Introduction
TheAmericanSocietyofPlasticSurgeons(ASPS),anonprofitorganization,supportsitsmembersintheireffortstoprovidethehighestqualitypatientcarethrougheducation,researchandadvocacy.Itistheonlyorganizationwiththreedecadesofplasticsurgerystatistics–1992-2023.
ASPSisthelargestorganizationofboard-certifiedplasticsurgeonsintheworld.Withmorethan8,000members,theSocietyisrecognizedasaleadingauthorityandinformationsourceoncosmeticandreconstructiveplasticsurgery.
ASPScomprisesmorethan92percentofallboard-certifiedplasticsurgeonsintheUnitedStates.Foundedin1931,theSocietyrepresentsphysicianscertifiedbytheAmericanBoardofPlasticSurgery(ABPS)ortheRoyalCollegeofPhysiciansandSurgeonsofCanada.
TheASPSmissionistoprovidehigh-qualitycaretoplasticsurgerypatientsbyencouraginghighstandardsoftraining,ethics,physicianpracticeandresearchinplasticsurgery.ASPSMemberSurgeonsareuniquelyqualifiedtoperformcosmeticandreconstructiveplasticsurgeryonthefaceandallareasofthebody.

AsU.S.plasticsurgerypatientstransitionintoapost-pandemicworld,thespecialtycontin-uestoevolve,settlingintoanewnormal.The2023ASPSProceduralStatisticsrevealsubtleyetsteadygrowth.Thisconsistentdemandforcosmeticandminimallyinvasiveproceduresmayindicatethatwhilethereisareturntomorebalanceddemand,patientsareplacingincreasedvalueontheiraesthetichealth.
Theseoveralltrendsindicatethatwhiletheexplosivegrowthseenduringthepandemicmayhavestabilized,thedemandforaestheticproceduresremainscomparativelyrobustwhensetagainstpre-COVIDdata.

In2023,facialprocedurescontinuedtobeinhighdemand.Blepharoplasty(eyelidsurgery)sawa5percentincrease,possiblyreflectingthetrendtowardsless-invasiveoptions,suchaspro-ceduresperformedunderlocalanesthesia.Thisapproachappealstothoseseekingarefreshedlookwithimprovedsafety.Rhinoplasty(nosereshaping)proceduresincreasedby6percent,whichcouldbedrivenbythegrowinginterestinethnicrhinoplasty,anofferingbymanyplas-ticsurgeonsthatmaintainsthepatient’sculturalidentity.

The2023ASPSProceduralStatisticshighlighta5percentincreaseyearoveryearinoverallcosmeticsurgeryprocedures.Thisrelativelyconsistentdemandmayindicateapost-pandemiccommitmentbypatientstotheiraestheticregimensdespiteongoingeconomicuncertainties.Withfinancialconcernsonthemindsofmany,patientslikewisemaybeseek-ingmorebudget-friendlyalternatives.Minimal-lyinvasiveproceduressawa7percentgrowthyearoveryear,suggestingthatpatientsareoptingforless-invasiveoptionstomaintaintheirbeautyregimenseconomically.

Liposuctionremainedthemostin-demandplas-ticsurgeryprocedurein2023,with347,782proceduresperformed,a7percentincreasefrom2022.Tummytucksalsosawa5percentrise,with170,110proceduresperformed,re-flectingongoinginterestinthesetransformativeprocedurestotightenandcontourthelowerabdomen.
Breastenhancementscontinuetoholdtheirplaceasaperennialfavoriteintheaestheticfield.In2023,breastaugmentation,includingbothprimaryandrevisionimplantplacements,accountedfor304,181procedures.Additionally,breastliftssawanotableincrease,with153,600proceduresperformed,markinga7percentyear-over-yearrise.Alongsidethesenumbers,explantprocedures–wheretheimplantsareremovedorreplaced–sawanotable9percentincrease.Thisrisecouldbeduetoseveralfactors,asdiscussedinthe“BalletBodyTrend”articleonpage8.
LowerBodyandExtremities
Asthefocusontheface,chestandcoreper-sisted,thelowerbodyandextremitiesalsosawnotabletrends.Theriseinbodyliftproceduresindicatesthatwhilepatientssoughttorefineandcontour,tighteninglaxskinwasalsoontheirradar.Thiswasparticularlytrueforareasliketheabdomen,thighs,groin,waistandbuttocks.
Exerciseanddiet,whilecrucial,oftenfallshortinrestoringskinelasticity,particularlyaftersig-nificantweightlossoraging.Surgicalinterven-tionsintheseareasprovidefinishingtouches,servingaharmoniousblendofmuscletoneand
skintautness.Upperarmliftsnotablyincreased8percentaspatientsaddressedstubborn“batwings”andlaxskinintheupperarms.Andwhilethighliftsremainedrelativelyevenyearoveryearat2per-cent,lowerbodyliftsincreasedby5percentandbuttockliftsrose6percent.
Whetherthroughsurgicaltoningornoninvasivetreatments,thepursuitwasclear:aholistic,well-roundedapproachtobodyenhancementthatcateredtoboththechallengesofweightlossandthenaturaleffectsofaging.
