1.1Introduction
Theautomobileindustryhasmadeatremendouschangeinmodernsoci-etybyfulfillingpeople’smobilityneeds.Oneofthegreatestachievementsintheautomobileindustrywasthedevelopmentofinternalcombustionengine(ICE)vehicles.Thishasledtogreateruseofvehiclesinhumansoci-ety.However,theuseofICEvehiclescreatessevereenvironmentalpollu-tionworldwide.Oneeffectivewaytoreduceenvironmentalpollutionistoincreasetheefficiencyofenergyconversionbydevelopingrenewableandalternativeenergysources[1].Theinventionofelectricvehicles(EVs)ishelpingtheautomobileindustrytoovercometheseenvironmentalissues.
ThischapterexplainsthehistoricaldevelopmentofEVsystemsandprovidesanoverviewofEVdrivetechnologiesandhybridelectricvehi-cles(HEVs),varioushybridelectricdrivetechnologieswiththeiroperationmodes,andpowertrainconceptswiththelevel/degreeofhybridizationandthetypesofHEVbasedonthenatureofpowersources.
