andthehundredsofotherproductsnowmarketedundertheProctor&
Gambleumbrellaexceedthirtybilliondollars.Thecompanyhasgrown
abitsinceitwasfoundedin1837inCincinnati,Ohio,byapairof
immigrantsnamedWilliamProctorandJamesGamble,eachofwhom
pledged$3,596.47totheenterprise.FordecadesProctor&Gamble
manufacturedcandlesandsoapinrelativelymodestquantities.It
tookmorethantwentyyearsforsalestotoponemilliondollars,
whichtheydidshortlybeforetheCivilWar.Thecompany,sbigbreak
camewiththeintroductionofitsfloatingsoapandtherealization
thatanelaborateadvertisingcampaigncouldturnasimple,though
high-quality,productintoaphenomenon.Thesoap,sbrandnamewas

foreverafterknownas"soapoperas.〃Overtheyearsthecompany
addeddozensofnewproductlinessuchasPrellshampoo,DuncanHines
cakemixes,andtheever-presentTide,“newandimproved"manya
time.Tothisday,however,IvorySoapremainsaProctor&Gamble
backboneproduct.Ivoryremainsafavoriteamongconsumers,too,and
