They take their dogs for walks, let them play outside, and give them good food and medical care. This means that when many people are competing for the same things, like good jobs, they are quick to forget their basic humanity. (Line 7, Para. 2) 這句話的意思是,許多人在為同樣的東西比如好的工作競爭時,他們很快就忘了自己的本性。 compete for sth.: 為某物而競爭在圣誕季節(jié),商店不得不為爭奪顧客而競爭。The stores have to compete for customers in the Christmas season.And if we fall ill or become miserable, we might become “sick as a dog.”.(Line 10, Para. 2) 如果生病了或狀況很糟糕,我們可能會“sick as a dog(得很嚴(yán)重)”。 fall ill 和become miserable 一樣,是“系動詞+ 表語”構(gòu)成系表結(jié)構(gòu),在從句中作謂語。常見的系動詞有be,become,fall,feel,seem,sound,turn 等。e.g. feel good, seem beautiful, sound great, turn red如果我在旅游時生病了怎么辦? What if I fall ill while Im away on holiday?3. For example, a woman might get angry at her husband for coming home late or forgetting their wedding anniversary.
