SCOPE

ScopeThisstandardestablishesqualificationandconformancerequirementsforelectricalinsulatingcom-pounds(conformalcoatings).Ithasbeendesignedandcon-structedwiththeintentofobtainingmaximumconfidenceinthematerialswithminimumtestredundancy.Thisstan-dardcovers:

Thequalificationandqualificationretentionoftheconfor-malcoatingmaterial(Table3-1,ColumnAandB).

Thequalityconformanceofconformalcoatingmaterialproperties(Table3-1,ColumnC).

Forthepurposeofthisstandard,thetermconformalcoat-ingisusedhereinwhenreferringtoatypeofprotectivecoatingforuseonprintedwiringassemblies.Theconfor-malcoatingisintendedtoprovideprotectionfrommoistureandcontaminationandprovideelectricalinsulation;notasasolesourceofmechanicalsupport.

Forthepurposeofthisstandard,inspectionsareperformedonstandardizedtestvehiclesinsteadofrealproductionassemblies.Astandardizedtestvehiclereferstothetestvehiclespecifiedpertestmethodindicated,coatedwiththeconformalcoatingunderinspection.

PurposeWithstandardizedtestingonstandardizedtestvehiclesundertestconditionsspecifiedintestmethodslistedherein,thisstandardenablesamanufacturertoqualifyhisconformalcoatingproductandexpressthequalificationitpossesses.Thisstandardalsoenablesthemanufacturertoattesttheconformanceofthequalityofproductiontothequalificationofeachproduct.

Classification

TypesConformalcoatingsshallbecategorizedintotypesbythecuredchemistryofthecoating.Thetypeformultifunctionalmaterialsshallbebasedonthechemis-trytypewhichisthehighestpercentagebyweight.

Conformalcoatingsshallbeofthefollowingtypes:TypeAR—Acrylic

TypeER—EpoxyTypeSR—Silicone

TypeUR—PolyurethaneTypeXY—Paraxylylene

ClassesThisstandardallowsamanufacturertoclassifyhisqualifiedproductsaccordingtofunctionalcapa-bilities.Inspectionandtestingrequirementsaredifferentforeachclass.Classificationattainedshallbereportedinthequalificationinspectionreport.AnexampleofthereportformatisshowninAppendixA.

Conformalcoatingsshallbeofthefollowingclasses:

ClassA—Non-hydrolyticallystableconformalcoating.Temperatureandhumidityagingtestisnotrequiredforthisclassofproduct.Lowermoistureinsulationresistanceispermitted(see3.7.1).

ClassB—Hydrolyticallystableconformalcoating.Tem-peratureandhumidityagingtestisrequiredforthisclassofproduct.Highermoistureinsulationresistanceisrequired(see3.7.1).

Note:Previousversionsofthisspecification,andotherIPCdocuments,makereferenceto‘‘Class1,’’‘‘Class2’’and‘‘Class3.’’InspectionandtestingrequirementsfortheseclassesarenotdirectlycorrelatedtoClassAandB.

Interpretation‘‘Shall,’’theimperativeformoftheverb,isusedthroughoutthisstandardwheneverarequire-mentisintendedtoexpressaprovisionthatismandatory.Deviationfroma‘‘shall’’requirementmaybeconsideredifsufficientdataissuppliedtojustifytheexception.

Thewords‘‘should’’and‘‘may’’areusedwheneveritisnecessarytoexpressnon-mandatoryprovisions.‘‘Will’’isusedtoexpressadeclarationofpurpose.

ConflictIntheeventofaconflictbetweentherequirementsofthisstandardandprocurementdocument,theprocurementdocumentshalltakeprecedence.Intheeventofaconflictbetweenthetestparametersofthisstan-dardandthetestmethods,oraconflictbetweentherequirementsinthisstandardandtheapplicabledocumentslistedinSection2,thisstandardshalltakeprecedence.

InspectionandTestingRequirementsGroupsofinspectionandtestlistedinTable3-1shallbeperformedtoverifytheabilityofaconformalcoatingproducttomeetthequalificationand/orconformancerequirementsofthisstandardusingthetestmethodsdescribedherein.

QualificationInspectionandTestingQualifica-tiontothisstandardisachievedwhenaconformalcoatingproductmeetstherequirementslistedinColumnAofTable3-1.Testsshallbeperformedinaccordancewiththetestmethodsspecifiedusingtestspecimenspreparedincompli-ancewith4.7.Aqualificationinspectionreportshallbecompletedinaccordancewith4.9andrelevanttestdataretainedassubstantiationforthequalification.AnexampleofqualificationinspectionreportformatisshowninAppendixA.

Whenaprimermaterialisusedinconjuctionwithacoat-inginqualificationtesting,theprimerusedwillbedocu-mentedinthequalificationreport.

ConformalcoatingspresentlyqualifiedtoMIL-I-46058shallalsoberecognizedasmeetingtherequirementsofIPC-CC-830.TheseproductscurrentlyqualifiedorintheprocessofbeingrequalifiedtoMIL-I-46058priortothepublishdateofthisdocumentwillalsoberecognizedasmeetingtherequirementsofthisdocument.

QualificationRetentionInspectionandTestingQualificationtothisstandardcanberetainedwhenacon-formalcoatingproductmeetstherequirementslistedinColumnBofTable3-1.Testsshallbeperformedinaccor-dancewiththetestmethodsspecifiedusingtestspecimenspreparedincompliancewith4.7atafrequencydefinedin

3-1aresatisfied.Testsshallbeperformedinaccordancewiththetestmethodsspecifiedusingtestspecimenspre-paredincompliancewith4.7atafrequencydefinedin

4.3.3.Pertinentresultsshallbecomparedwiththeresultsoftheoriginalqualificationtesting.Aninspectionreportshallbecompletedinaccordancewith4.9andrelevanttestdataretainedassubstantiationforthequalityconformance.AnexampleofqualityconformanceinspectionreportisshowninAppendixC.

Conformalcoatingqualityconformanceinspectionisgen-erallyperformedbythecoatingmanufacturer,butmaywithappropriateagreementbeusedasanincomingmate-rialinspectionprocedurebythecustomers.

AdditionalTestingAdditionaltestingondifferenttestvehicles,atdifferenttestfrequencyorconditions,orforpropertiesoutsidethescopeofthisstandardmaybeagreeduponbetweenthemanufacturersandthecustomers.Itshallnotbeusedasasubstituteforanytestingrequire-mentspecifiedherein.

MaterialsRequirements

MaterialsTheconformalcoatingmaterialsshall

befreeofdeleterioussubstances.

ShelfLifeTheconformalcoatingshallmeetallrequirementsofthisstandardwithintheshelflifeandstor-ageconditionsspecifiedbytheconformalcoatingmanufac-turer.Shelflifeofcoatingwithtwoormorecomponentsshallbethatofthecomponentwiththeshortestshelflife.ThetestsshallconsistofInsulationResistance(IR)andDielectricWithstandingVoltage(DWV).

CureTheconformalcoatingshallexhibitalldesiredpropertieswhenappliedandcuredusingtheproce-duresspecifiedbytheconformalcoatingmanufacturer.

Whencoatingmaterialsaretestedasspecified,thecoatingmaterialshallbecuredtofullhardnessinthetimeandtemperaturerecommendedbythesupplier.

ChemicalRequirements

FourierTransformInfraredSpectroscopyTest(FTIR)FourierTransformInfraredSpectroscopy(FTIR)testshallbeperformedinaccordancewithIPC-TM-650,TestMethod2.3.42,orequivalent,aspartofdatagatheringfortheconformalcoatingduringqualificationinspection.Whenusedinqualificationretentioninspection,FTIRspectrashallbecomparedtothoseobtainedduringqualifi-cationinspection.Absorptionpeakscompletelymissingoradditionalpeakssignifychangeinchemistrypresentwithin

theconformalcoatingproduct.AchangeinchemistryasdetectedbyFTIRmayormaynotconstituteaproductchange.See4.4forthedefinitionofproductchange.

PhysicalRequirements

ViscosityViscosityofuncuredconformalcoatingmaterials,excepttypexy,shallbemeasuredperASTMD-1084andthetestconditionsshallbedefinedbythecoatingmanufacturer.Viscosityshallbemeasuredaspartofdatagatheringfortheconformalcoatingduringqualifi-cationinspection.Thisviscositydatashallbeusedbythemanufacturertopre-determineanacceptableviscosityrangeforqualityconformanceinspection.

AppearanceAppearanceofconformalcoatingonthetestvehiclespecifiedhereinshallbeobservedvisuallywiththeaidofa3-diopter(approximately1.75x)minimummagnification.Refereeinspectionsshallbeaccomplishedat10xmagnification.

Theuncuredconformalcoatingmaterialsshallbefreeofdeleterioussubstances,bubbles,pinholes,whitishspots,blistering,wrinkling,cracking,andpeeling.Thecuredcon-formalcoatingshallbesmooth,homogenous,transparentortranslucent,andtack-freewhenobservedatambientconditions.Inaddition,theconformalcoatingonthetestvehiclesshallhavenobubbles,pinholes,blisters,cracking,crazing,peeling,wrinkles,mealing,orevidenceofrever-sion,orcauseacorrosion.

FluorescenceConformalcoatingmaterials,excepttypeXY,shallbefluorescentbyultra-violetillumination(blacklight).

FungusResistanceTheresistanceoftheconfor-malcoatingmaterialtosupportorbeattackedbybiologi-calgrowthshallbedeterminedinaccordancewithIPC-TM-650,TestMethod.

Thecuredconformalcoatingshallnotcontributetoorbeattackedbybiologicalgrowth.

FlexibilityTinpanelspreparedinaccordancewithFED-STD-141,Method2012shallbeusedastestvehiclesforflexibilitytesting.WhenthecoatedpanelsaretestedinaccordancewithIPC-TM-650,TestMethod,thereshallbenoevidenceofcrackingorcrazingonthecuredconformalcoating.

FlammabilityFlammabilitytestingofthecuredconformalcoatingshallbeperformedinaccordancewiththedetailedrequirementsofUL94HB(HorizontalBurn-ingTest)testmethods.

ThecuredconformalcoatingshallmeetUL94HB(Hori-zontalBurningTest)requirements:

Nothaveaburningrateexceeding40mm[1.57in]perminuteovera75mm[2.95in]spanforspecimenshav-ingathicknessof3.0to13mm[0.118to0.512in],or

Nothaveaburningrateexceeding75mm[2.95in]perminuteover
