ThorHeyerdahlisanextraordinaryNorwegian:sailor,scientist,

explorer.andgeographer.Manyyearsagohebegantobefascinatedbythe

tombs.Hemadeblueprintsforshipconstructionfrominscriptionsonthe

tombs.AboatfromearlyEgyptwouldhavebeenbuiltoutofpapyrus-a

reed-1ikeplantgrowingalongtheNile.Theconstructionofaboatwith

ancientEgyptianmaterialsandmethodsseemedpossiblc.Heplannedtosail

toAmericaintheship.Hisdissenterslaughedandsaiditwasimpossible.

Nevertheless,hekepton.Theycompletedtheboatofpapyrusandnamed

itRAaftertheEgyptiansungodwhenitwasready.Heyerdahlandhis

internationalcrewpackeditforthelongjourney.Theytook.onlythe

ancientfoodsthattheycouldprovewereavailabletoearlyEgyptians.

HeyerdahlandhiscrewleftAfricaintheRAin1969,butaftertwo

difficultmonthsatsea,theboatwasdestroyed.Theystilldidnotgive

up.Theybuiltanothership,theRAIIandthattimeusedtheskillsof

AmericanIndiansfromalakehighintheAndesMountainsinSouihAmerica

tohelpbuildthereedshipintheancientway.In1970,theytriedagain

tocrosstheAtlanticOcean.After57days,theRAIIcompleteditsjourney

of3,200miles.

ThorHeyerdahldidnotprovethatancientEgyptianssailedtoAmerica,

butheprovedthattheycouldhavedoneit.Manygeographershavebecome
