(一)when，while都有“當……時候”意思。when既可表示某一點時間，也能夠表示某一段時間。在when引導時間狀語從句中，其謂語動詞能夠是延續(xù)性，也能夠是非延續(xù)性，可與主句中謂語動詞同時發(fā)生，也可在其后發(fā)生。如：

Iwasjustreadingabookwhenshecameintomyroom.

她走進我房間時，我正在看書。

Wereyouwritingwhentheteachercamein?

老師進來時候，你在寫信嗎？

Whenhewasachild,hewasalwaystryingoutnewideas.

他小時候就經(jīng)常試驗一些新構(gòu)想。

(二)while只能表示某一段時間，不能表示某一點時間。在while引導時間狀語從句中，其謂語動詞只能是延續(xù)性，而且也只能與主句中謂語動詞同時發(fā)生或存在。如：

WhileJimwasmendinghisbike,LinTaocametoseehim.

正當吉姆修自行車時，林濤來看他。

Youcan’tdoyourhomeworkwhileyou’rewatchingTV.

你不能一邊看電視一邊做家庭作業(yè)。

(三)when和while區(qū)分還在于:while引導時間狀語從句多用進行時態(tài)，而when引導時間狀語從句多用普通時態(tài)。如：

Whiletheyweretalking,thebellrang.

他們談話時候，上課鈴響了。

Iwasdoingmyhomeworkwhenmymothercamebackhomeyesterdayevening.

昨天晚上媽媽回家時候，我正在做家庭作。[鏈接]

as所表示動作與主句同時發(fā)生，含有延續(xù)含義，普通與延續(xù)行動詞連用。如：

Asthedoctorswerecheckinghim,thepaingotworse.

醫(yī)生給他做檢驗時，疼痛加劇了。

他進來時候我正出去。注意

(1)如主句謂語動詞表示是短暫動作，從句時間狀語指一段時間，when,while,as三者可通用。

正當開會時候他走進了房間。

(2)as和while可用來指一段時間，但as強調(diào)主句與從句表示動作同時發(fā)生，while強調(diào)主句表示動作是在while從句動作延續(xù)中發(fā)生。

當我媽媽唱起那些老歌時，眼淚順著她臉頰流了下來。
