留學(xué)申請(qǐng)常識(shí)及材料準(zhǔn)備 一般中國(guó)學(xué)生都申請(qǐng)秋季入學(xué),那么如果你要2006年秋季入學(xué),你的申請(qǐng)材料就必須在2005年底的時(shí)候或者是2006年初寄過(guò)去。申請(qǐng)必須準(zhǔn)備那些東西呢?首先是GPA,也就是平均分,如果你的排名很高也可以。其次是TOEFL和GRE,這必須在開(kāi)始申請(qǐng)前考完。我們來(lái)看看申請(qǐng)準(zhǔn)備材料的清單: 本科生:(對(duì)每個(gè)學(xué)校) 1。 學(xué)校必須的申請(qǐng)表格。 2。一份或兩份從大一到大三的全部課程成績(jī)單,有個(gè)別學(xué)??赡軙?huì)要求將大四第一學(xué)期的成績(jī)單提交。成績(jī)單要有教務(wù)的公章,并且由教務(wù)封好信封,在封口處蓋章。成績(jī)單必須是中英文對(duì)照。 3。 三封推薦信。一般由老師寫好后,簽字,和推薦表格一起密封在信封內(nèi),然后在封口處簽字。注意是所有封口簽字,因此建議使用只有一個(gè)封口的信封。 4。 英語(yǔ)能力的證明信。部分學(xué)校,如Princeton,Boston College等要求由英語(yǔ)教師或以英語(yǔ)為母語(yǔ)的導(dǎo)師填寫一個(gè)證明申請(qǐng)人英語(yǔ)能力的表格。 5。 個(gè)人簡(jiǎn)歷(Resume)。 6。 如果專業(yè)成績(jī)較好,可以列一份專業(yè)課程的成績(jī)列表。 7。 如果排名較高,可以在系里開(kāi)一份排名證明。 8。 如果發(fā)表過(guò)論文,可以把論文的Abstract復(fù)印,附在申請(qǐng)材料中。 9。 如果在國(guó)際競(jìng)賽中獲過(guò)獎(jiǎng),可以把獎(jiǎng)狀復(fù)印附在申請(qǐng)材料中。 10。 有些文科專業(yè)需要提交Writing Sample。有些學(xué)校需要提交研究計(jì)劃。 研究生:(對(duì)每個(gè)學(xué)校) 除了上面本科生所需的材料之外,還應(yīng)該準(zhǔn)備 1。 本科的畢業(yè)證、學(xué)位證與成績(jī)單一起封好。 2。 如果有工作經(jīng)歷,并且對(duì)申請(qǐng)有用,應(yīng)該開(kāi)出工作證明。 雖然申請(qǐng)研究生院的文書工作并不是象申請(qǐng)商學(xué)院的MBA那么恐怖,但時(shí)間總是有限的,當(dāng)你拿到申請(qǐng)材料的時(shí)候,就應(yīng)該仔細(xì)看看,運(yùn)籌一下你要如何把握那些關(guān)鍵因素:Personal Statement、申請(qǐng)表格、推薦信、成績(jī)單、GRE、TOEFL成績(jī),還有可能的電話或者面對(duì)面面試。 古語(yǔ)云“知己知彼,百戰(zhàn)不殆”,在申請(qǐng)前仔細(xì)研究一下申請(qǐng)中的基本信息、背景知識(shí)和相關(guān)技巧是非常必要的。下面,我們來(lái)看看申請(qǐng)中常常提到的幾個(gè)概念:1。錄取委員會(huì)(The Admissions Committee) 每個(gè)系都有自己的錄取委員會(huì),他們主要負(fù)責(zé)決定是錄取還是拒絕一個(gè)申請(qǐng)者。即使你的材料開(kāi)始是寄到研究生院,也會(huì)很快的轉(zhuǎn)到你申請(qǐng)的院系。一般研究生院的錄取委員會(huì)主要是由教授構(gòu)成,這就是為什么聯(lián)系某些教授(套辭)有時(shí)會(huì)有非常大的作用,因?yàn)楹苡锌赡苓@些被套的教授掌握著錄取的大權(quán)。還有些研究生院采取投票制度,即所有評(píng)委Committee member一起Vote,差額選舉,來(lái)決定最終的候選人。 錄取過(guò)程都是怎樣的呢?一旦你的申請(qǐng)材料完成并寄到研究生院的錄取辦公室,它就會(huì)被處理然后轉(zhuǎn)到相應(yīng)的院系。每個(gè)系都會(huì)有一個(gè)錄取委員會(huì),包括五到六個(gè)教授,有時(shí)候有一兩個(gè)博士生(Ph。D。),他們將決定錄取誰(shuí)。 大多數(shù)錄取委員會(huì)一收到材料就開(kāi)始審閱,把申請(qǐng)者分為兩堆,yes或者no,(Waiting list在研究生院相對(duì)少一些),第一堆最少,第二堆最多。 2。 院系秘書(The Departmental Secretary/Coordinator) 每個(gè)學(xué)院都有一個(gè)(至少一個(gè))重要的行政調(diào)度者,他/她通曉申請(qǐng)過(guò)程中的絕大多數(shù)細(xì)節(jié),并能夠積極地回答問(wèn)題,幫助申請(qǐng)者解決問(wèn)題。他/她通常被稱為“小秘”、“小米”(secretary),或者是協(xié)調(diào)員(coordinator/administrator),他/她甚至可以對(duì)你的申請(qǐng)策略提出建議,并幫助你評(píng)估你的競(jìng)爭(zhēng)力。記住,這(些)人并沒(méi)有最后的生殺大權(quán),但是他/她卻有著強(qiáng)烈的影響錄取委員會(huì)成員的能力。 如果你對(duì)申請(qǐng)有任何問(wèn)題或者疑問(wèn),您可以發(fā)信或者打電話聯(lián)系這(些)人,而不是直接聯(lián)系主任之類的重量級(jí)人物。記住一定要非常禮貌、客氣。根據(jù)我們所講過(guò)的信息不均衡原則,這(類)人通常掌握大量有效的資源信息,如今年計(jì)劃錄取人數(shù),去年招收了多少中國(guó)學(xué)生,你的托福、GRE成績(jī)是否符合學(xué)校標(biāo)準(zhǔn)等等。因此,與他/她建立良好的關(guān)系對(duì)你的申請(qǐng)有可能會(huì)有非常大的幫助。值得注意的一點(diǎn)是他/她每天很忙,不要經(jīng)常騷擾即可。 3。 截止日期(Deadlines) 這個(gè)名詞大家一看就知道什么意思,再此不再贅述。提醒大家一點(diǎn):各學(xué)校的截至日期是不同的,時(shí)間一般從12月份跨至次年2月份。建議大家將這樣的重要信息統(tǒng)計(jì)起來(lái),隨時(shí)檢索,先做截止日期早的學(xué)校。詳情可以參照書后的附錄。4。 申請(qǐng)費(fèi)(Application Fee) 絕大多數(shù)學(xué)校對(duì)申請(qǐng)費(fèi)的要求都是非常嚴(yán)格的,但也不排除象Cornell,Rochester這樣對(duì)申請(qǐng)費(fèi)有flexibility的學(xué)校。建議象統(tǒng)計(jì)截止日期一樣將所有學(xué)校的申請(qǐng)費(fèi)要求列表統(tǒng)計(jì),便于自己統(tǒng)一到銀行辦理匯票或是網(wǎng)上申請(qǐng)。如何逃申請(qǐng)費(fèi)一直是中國(guó)學(xué)生比較關(guān)注的問(wèn)題,我們建議對(duì)自己非常想要去的學(xué)校最好還是交費(fèi)。 5。 考試分?jǐn)?shù)(Test Scores) 一般所需要提交的標(biāo)準(zhǔn)化考試包含TOEFL、GRE、GRE SUB(部分學(xué)校和學(xué)科要求、部分學(xué)校和學(xué)科強(qiáng)烈建議)。值得一提的是,這些考試成績(jī)的重要性并不是很大,學(xué)校
