health problem.” so reads the headline of an article published by the american institute of stress that claims the biggest threat to health today is neither cancer nor aids. the report says: “it has been estimated(估計(jì))that 75 to 90 percent of all visits to primary care physicians are for stress related problems.” it is no exaggeration(夸張)to say that people today are being attacked by stress. according to the national consumers league, “work is the top source of stress for adults who have problems and stress in their lives (39%), followed by family (30%). other sources include health (10%), concern about the economy (9%) and concern about international conflict and terrorism (4%).”however, stress is hardly unique to the united states. a british survey in 2005 estimated that “over half a million individuals in britain believed in 2004 that they were experiencing work-related stress at a level that was making them ill.” as a result of “work-related stress, depression or anxiety,” there are “an estimated thirteen and a half million reported lost working days per year in britain.” the picture is no less bleak in mainland europe. according to the european agency for safety and health at work, “work-related stress has been shown to affect millions of european workers across all types of employment sectors.” one survey revealed that there are “about 41 million workers affected by work-related stress each year.” what about asia? a report issued by a conference held in tokyo concluded: “job stress is a common concern among many countries in the world, both developing and industrialized countries.” the report observed that “several countries in east asia, including china and korea, have rapidly industrialized and economically grown. these countries now have a lot of concerns on job stress and its harmful effects on workers health.” 1. the author quoted “americas no.1 health problem.” (para. 1) in order to _. a. talk about health problems in america b. introduce the topic of stress c. emphasize the stress in america d. tell readers something about american institute of stress 答案解析:答案為b。 2. from the passage we can learn that . a. both cancer and aids are not as serious as the threat of stress to healthb. stress is mainly from working and living pressurec. americans never care about international conflict and terrorismd. people in mainland europe are more optimistic than english people答案解析:答案為b。 由第二段 “work is the top source of stress for adults who have problems and stress in their lives (39%), followed by family (30%). other sources include health (10%), concern about the economy (9%) and concern about international conflict and terrorism (4%).” 由第一段 “americas no.1 health problem.” so reads the headline of an article published by the american institute of stress that claims the biggest threat to health today is neither cancer nor aids.” 第三段揭示了英國(guó)人的工作壓力非常大,第四段的首句理解是關(guān)鍵 “the picture is no less bleak in mainland europe.” 3. it can be inferred from the last paragraph that _. a. asian people are more willing to develop their countriesb. the rapid economic development is the main reason for stress c. some people in asian countries have health problems from employment stress d. asian countries have a better situation of stress than europe 答案解析:答案為c。 最后一段揭示了亞洲的壓力情況,由該段的最后一句話 “these countries now have a lot of concerns on job stress and its harmful effects on workers health.” 4. whats the main subject of the passage? a. stress attacking health.b. how to deal with stress.c. a survey on working stress.d. health problems around the world. 鹃喿x理解】 for those who study the development of intelligence (智力) in the animal world, selfawareness is an important measurement. an animal that is aware (意識(shí)) of itself has a high level of intelligence. awareness can be tested by studying whether the animal recognizes itself in the mirror, that is, its own reflected image (反射出的影像). many animals fail this exercise bitterly, paying very little attention to the reflected image. only humans, and some intelligent animals like apes and dolphins, have been shown to recognize that the image in the mirror is of themselves.now another animal has joined the club. in the proceedings of the national academy of sciences, researchers report that an asian elephant has passed the mirror selfreflection test. “we thought that elephants were the next important animal,”said diana reiss of the wildlife conservation society, an author of the study with joshua m. plotnik and fansb. m. de waal of emory university. with their large brains, reiss said, elephants “seemed like cousins to apes and dolphins.”the researchers tested happy. maxine and patty, three elephants at the bronx zoo. they put an 8footsquare mirror on a wall of the animals play area (out of the sight of zoo visitors) and recorded what happened with cameras, including one built in the mirror.the elephants used their long noses to find what was behind it,and to examine parts of their bodies.of the three, happy then passed the test,in which a clear mark was painted on one side of her face. she could tell the mark was there by looking in the mirror, and she used the mirror to touch the mark with her long nose.diana reiss said,“we knew elephants were intelligent, but now we can talk about their intelligence in a better way.” 1. what can mirror tests tell us about animals?a. whether they have large brains. b. whether they have selfawareness.c. whether they enjoy outdoor exercises. d. whether they enjoy playing with mirrors. 由文章第二段第一句話“awareness can be tested by.” 2. why does the author mention apes and dolphins in the text?a. they are most familiar to readers.b. they are big favorites with zoo visitors.c. they are included in the study by reiss.d. they are already known to be intelligent. 3. what made happy different from maxine and patty?a. she used her nose to search behind the mirror.b. she recognized her own image in the mirror.c. she painted a mark on her own face.d. she found the hidden camera. top four ways to build a wonderful life1. live below your meansthere will always be temptation to give up the future for immediate pleasure. we all want to buy that new piece of technology, treat ourselves to an expensive night on the town, or take out a loan for the flashy car we cant afford. it might feel great at the time but unwise spending hurts a lot later on. enjoy lifes simple pleasures and save as much as you can. expensive things dont create lasting happiness and security. careful spending will bring you greater leisure and enjoyment in the long run.2. put your money to worksaving is great, but to make the most of your money you need to put it to work. good investments can be the difference between retiring in your 40s or in your 60s. a post today at the simple dollar really got me thinking. according to trents estimates, if a person in their early 20s invests 20% of their income in an s&p index fund, the interest they earn will equal their current salary when they reach their early 40s. they could retire without a drop in income! wise investing is the surest path to financial independence and its something everyone can work on. its definitely an area ill be devoting more attention to in my personal life.3. educate yourselfto be happy we need continuous growth. the best way to grow is life-long education. this doesnt mean you need to pursue a doctorate or spend 2 hours reading every day. self-education can be anything that takes you out of your comfort zone. the important part is keeping an open mind and searching for fresh ideas and perspectives. education builds over time. it might feel like the bits of wisdom you acquire dont mean much, but over the years they add up to form a wiser, kinder, more interesting person. 4. develop lasting personal relationshipssuppose you had everything you wanted. would you be happy without anyone to share it with? the personal relationships we develop with friends and family members are the greatest source of happiness in our lives. dont forget about them. taking the time to cultivate and enjoy personal relationships is essential to long-term happiness. without the people you care about youll probably be miserable, no matter how successful you become.46.according to the passage, in order to achieve financial independence after retirement, wed better _.a. get along well with our family and friendsb. bring ourselves leisure as well as enjoymentc. invest our money wisely when we are youngd. learn some new skills and try to find a new job47.from the passage we can infer that some people try to _.a. gain happiness by buying themselves expensive things b. save everything they can to help those in needc. devote more attention to their personal lifed. take out a loan to promote technology48.the author of the passage may agree that the key to self-education is _.a. gaining as many degrees as possibleb. being open to new ideas and viewsc. only focusing on very big eventsd. creating long-term happiness49.the above passage is written in order to _.a. explain what true happiness is aboutb. offer ways to achieve a happy and successful lifec. introduce different definitions about happiness d. persuade readers to find out the meaning of life46.c 48.b 根據(jù)文章第三段the important part is keeping an open mind and searching for fresh ideas and perspectives可知。 the crowd at the airport flowed forward. the passengers had been waiting for a couple of hours for an airline employee to open the door leading to the plane outside. no one was in a good mood. an old man got trapped in the middle of the rush. he fell down without being able to break his fall. his head hit the concrete floor. blood poured from his forehead. he appeared to be unconscious. everyone rushed past him, except dana. she called for help. a minute later, a young air
