Unit 2 Working the land 教材背景鏈接,No pains,no gains.不勞無獲。 As a man sows,so he shall reap.種瓜得瓜,種豆得豆。 Knowledge requires repeated explorations,and farmland needs intensive cultivation. 知識需要反復(fù)探索,土地需要辛勤耕耘。,Yuan Longpings road to super hybrid rice 袁隆平,中國工程院院士, 我國當(dāng)代杰出的農(nóng)業(yè)科學(xué)家, 享譽(yù)世界的“雜交水稻之父”。他工作50多年來所取得的科研成果使我國雜交水稻研究及應(yīng)用領(lǐng)域領(lǐng)先世界水平,不僅解決了中國糧食自給的難題,也為世界糧食安全做出了杰出貢獻(xiàn)。,Yuan Longping was born in a poor farmers family in 1930 and graduated from Southwest Agricultural College in 1953.Then he began his teaching career at an agriculture school in Anjiang,Hunan Province. He came up with an idea of hybridizing rice in the 1960s,when a series of natural disasters and improper policies had plunged (使陷入) China into a famine (饑荒) that caused many deaths.,Since then,he has devoted himself to the research and development of a better rice breed.In 1964,he happened to find a natural hybrid rice plant that had obvious advantages over others.Greatly encouraged,he began to study the elements of this particular type.In 1973,in cooperation with others,he was able to cultivate (培育) a type of hybrid rice species which had great advantages.,It yielded 20 percent more per unit than that of common ones.The next year their research made a breakthrough in seeding.They successfully developed a set of technologies for producing hybrid rice,putting China in the lead worldwide in rice production.For this achievement,he was named the “Father of Hybrid Rice”,In 1979,their technique for hybrid rice was introduced into the United States,the first case of intellectual property rights transfer in the history of new China. At present,as many as 50% of Chinas total rice fields grow Yuan Longpings hybrid rice species,which yield 60% of the rice production in China.,Due to Yuan s hard work,China s total rice output rose from 50 million tons in 1950 to nearly 200 million tons in recent years.The annual yield is enough to feed 60 million people.
